Motorcycle Exhaust
|
Perhaps the most common modification to a bike, new or used, is an after-market motorcycle exhaust system. This not only has the advantage of customizing the look and sound of your motorcycle, but also can potentially have a rather profound impact on the potential horsepower and emission profile of most motorcycles. Exhaust modifications can be made out of exotic materials or even be designed to dramatically increase the volume.

Whatever the reason, many people choose to begin modifications as soon as they receive a new or used bike. There are quite a few different manufacturers of such motorcycle exhaust systems, nearly all of which may be found at online auction sites such as motoyard.com and others. You may replace single components of an exhaust system or replace the whole system itself. Often times full motorcycle exhaust system modifications are part of a kit, whereas single parts are sold separately.

A good quality after-market motorcycle exhaust system is able to be securely mounted without the need to regularly tighten or refasten once installed. It should be able to withstand very high temperatures, ideally without using asbestos or other toxic materials. In some places there are ordinances regarding noise levels, making it necessary to find mufflers and motorcycle exhaust systems that comply with state and local regulations. On the other hand, the maxim that, “loud pipes save lives,” is borne out by research – people are more likely to see you when they can hear you, too. As such, nearly as many motorcycle exhaust modifications are designed to reduce noise as they are to increase it.
