You might not notice on short runs in town, but comfortable motorcycle seats (often called saddles) are of paramount importance on long rides of more than a few hours. Not only must the seat absorb the shock of the road and vibration from the engine, but it should also be right size and shape to provide adequate support for riding. It should also promote good posture that is comfortable and encourages alertness. There are even companies that tailor make replacement motorcycle seats according to their customers' personal measurements.

Though a very popular replacement item, motorcycle seats can be quite a bit more expensive to replace than foot pegs or handle bars. This is partly due to the higher cost of materials and shipping, but also, because many are (at least partially) hand-made. Replacement motorcycle seats can be single or dual, and many are now stuffed with modern materials such as shock absorbing gel and new types of sculpted foam. They are offered for just about every make a model of motorcycle available and include specially designed base plates (where it attaches to the bike) that represent the largest investment of engineering in the whole process, guarantee a good fit. It's no fun to ride when it hurts to do so. Purchasing and installing new motorcycle seats has saved countless sore backsides.
